Well...here it is 3 years since you first posted your list and it is still encouraging, motivating, inspiring others. My family, too, has it's Rules for Beauty, Goodness and Truth and even though I am not Catholic (I was raised Catholic but am now an evangelical Christian) prayer is an integral part of our list. All other parts of the list pale in comparison, for without prayer we tend to forget why we need Beauty, Goodness and Truth in our lives. For it is on the Author of truth, beauty and goodness that we must rely to fulfill these simple goals.

[...] I wonder if one reason the Hard Stuff works well for us is that I feel no pressure to finish the whole thing, figuring that every little morsel of Homer or Shakespeare is a boost, a blessing, a bit of nourishment for mind or soul. You know how Flylady talks about every little bit of housework, even housework done clumsily, being a blessing for the home? I guess that’s my take on these literary classics. Our best, deepest, most affecting discussions have been sparked by small passages from big works. Some weeks I may not read more than a score of lines from The Odyssey, a single paragraph from Plutarch’s Life of Pericles, but weeks, months, years later we’re still chewing on those big ideas. [...]

The Rule of Six reminds me of a Goethe quote I have had framed on my wall since before I even had my child. It came from a Literary Calendar, which, sadly, I don't think is being published anymore. Anyway, the quote is:

One ought, every day at least,
to hear a little song, read a good poem,
see a fine picture, and, if it were possible,
to speak a few reasonable words.

Thanks you for your blogs. They inspire and entertain me!

Meaningful Work

There has been some discussion around the homeschooling blogs about Melissa's Rule of 6. I have been thinking about the last one, meaningful work, because Tigger has been doing quite a bit of it. Including baking bread. The bread idea
