For three years running, I have meant to order a copy of Jotham’s Journey to read aloud during Advent. People whose taste I trust have recommended it highly. I almost bought it over the summer, but it seemed silly to add yet another book to my overflowing moving boxes. Prudently, responsibly, I decided to wait.
And now I find that it’s out of print. Used copies are selling for upwards of $50. Doggone it.
Guess we’ll be making our Advent journey without Jotham’s company yet again this year. Ah, well. We never manage to read all our Christmas favorites anyway!

Funny you should mention that. Several families were just raving about this book at a gathering we had last Friday. I had never heard of it before. Nuts.
Posted on November 6th, 2006 at 10:22 amJust to have a different opinion, our family did not like Jotham’s Journey. There was way too much violence in it for us. The situations were contrived to leave you in some sort of suspence day-to-day, which means that some of it seemed, well, over-contrived.
I’d give you our book, but I already gave it away.
I wouldn’t recommend it.

Posted on November 6th, 2006 at 7:12 pmWe do it as a read-aloud (that way Atticus can edit out anything necessary) and it has become a beloved Daddy/daughter tradition during Advent. He camps it up rather nicely.
My kids actually love the contrived cliff-hangers, Nancy — it made them look forward to the next night’s reading after dinner. They are contrived, but we still have fun with it.

Posted on November 7th, 2006 at 4:57 amHow did I miss the feast day of St. ATTICUS????
Oh Melissa, I have a copy sitting in my Christmas books box, and I’d be happy to send it to you.
We read through it one year, but my kids are teenagers now and too old for it. I’d love to give it to you–just send me your mailing address.
