I Think I’ll Keep Her

Jane asks eagerly how far I am in The Sherwood Ring.

“At the part where Barbara __________” (What, you think I’d give it away? Fie upon spoilers!)

I groan to indicate my state of suspense. This is a really gripping part of the book. All parts of this book have been gripping, but this is the grippingest so far.

“Oh, Mom!” cries Jane in sympathy.

And offers to babysit the little ones this morning so I can finish the book.

That’s my girl.

Answers to yesterday’s book quotes coming later. A lot of them have been guessed correctly already. And check out the comments for a few stumpers from other readers. I thought of another one this morning. It’s an easy one, a line we say so often I can’t believe it wasn’t the first quote to pop into my head yesterday—

“We’ll eat you up, we love you so!”

(Usually modified to “I,” applied with great frequency to toddlers and nice fat babies.)

  1. That one’s from Where the Wild Things Are :-).

  2. My big two are dear like that too—when the youngest was new they took turns doing everything so that I could read the latest beloved book that they wanted to share with me!
Their greatest concern when they found that there was to be a new baby was, “what if she isn’t like us?” “What if she is, athletic?”! We are all delighted to see that the love of books has taken hold of her too. It is contagious! 🙂

  3. How sweet your Jane is.

  4. That’s too easy. Where The Wild Things Are.

How incredibly lovely that you share books with your daughter.

  5. Oh boy! Can’t WAIT until the day one of my children says to me!

(Say I as I churn steadily through the 1200 or so pages of Les Miserables, which has reached its renewal limit at the library … can I borrow Jane for a day?)

  6. The love of literature is so evident in your home!

  7. Too funny, we just got this one from the library pick up!! Can’t wait to start it 🙂

  8. I KNEW that quote and yet, I didn’t. As in, “We’ve read that book, we HAVE that book, which book IS IT?!!”

    Ultimately I cheated.

Yes, my friend, we’re talking the two words most common to Internet cheaters: Google Search.

    And I found it.

    Of course!

Angela was looking over my shoulder as the Maurice Sendak’s classic cover illustration popped up on the screen. “Angela, do we have that book upstairs?” I asked.

“Go get it for Mommy, okay?”

Lip trembling, it was clear she feared the worst. “Is it…due??”

“No, honey, we OWN the book. I just want to read it to you.”

Happily then did she skip off. 🙂

  9. One of our favorite quotes comes from a Sandra Boynton board book, “They made the mess that monsters make.” With five kids in the family, my dh and I have used this many, many times.
